ASKED QUESTIONS
-
Rafting – The minimum age is 5 years old. This is firm and part of the external regulations we have to comply with. Anyone under 13 needs to be accompanied by an adult and a waiver of liability needs to be signed by someone over 18.
Kayaking – We do not have a set minimum age for kayaking; children may be able to go in the front of a double kayak if accompanied by a competent adult. With young children, the adult will need to be able to paddle a double kayak without the assistance of the child and the child needs to have the patience to sit in the front of the kayak. Generally around age 5 is a good guideline but feel free to discuss this with us if you have any questions regarding this.

For Kayaking our biggest concern is the wind conditions and we have strict safety cut offs. We will endeavour to warn you a few days in advance if it looks like the weather will be unsuitable, if conditions are marginal we like to discuss this with you so we ask that clients contact us the day before their trip so we can talk about it.
If you prefer not to paddle in the rain we do ask for a minimum of 24 hours notice of any cancellation so it is a good idea to keep an eye on the forecast if this is something you are concerned about.
Your bottom half is in the sea kayak and we have splash decks that keep your bottom half protected. We have fleece tops available as an extra layer to keep your top half warm if needed.
Rafting really is the perfect wet weather activity. While you only get a few splashes on Grade 2 many people choose to jump out for a swim, we provide wetsuits and wetsuit boots to keep you warm and also have fleece tops for an extra layer. The river is dam controlled so water levels do not change dramatically unless there has been enough rain for them to raise the dam. We will contact you to discuss this if this is likely.

We provide you with a life jacket so for most trips being able to swim is not essential. However, it is important that you let your guide know if you cannot swim.

For all trips you need a swimsuit and a towel for afterwards.
Sun block is a good idea in summer.
For Kayaking it is not a bad idea to have something other than your wet swimwear to change into afterwards. Especially for the evening trip, as Rotorua is around 300m above sea level temperatures do drop in the evening and you also notice it after hopping out of Hot Pool. On the Evening trip we have dinner outside under a shelter and it is dark by the time we finish.
We do have Polar Fleece Tops available as an extra layer to keep you warm if needed.

If you are unsure we would recommend contacting us to discuss this before you book.
Bring any medication you need with you, we can store it safely if required and let your guide know if there is anything they should be aware of.

We would recommend only bringing what you need for the day with you. For the rafting our shuttle driver can look after anything your are concerned about. For kayaking you can bring things in the kayak with you.
